A: Pashmina shawls have been made for centuries in the valley of Kashmir. They were first introduced in the valley by the famous 15th century Sultan Zain-ul-Aabedin also known as "Bud Shah", who encouraged skilled craftsmen from Central Asia to intruduce different arts in the valley. The shawls had their first journey of fame in the Western world when the British came to India. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, it was very common for rich women in Europe to own a Pashmina. Although now Pashmina Shawls are also made in northern India and Nepal, they art spead by Kashmiris migrating to these places. A: Pashmina Bazar is the only Pashmina Seller online that can proudly claim a direct link to the history of Pashmina Shawls and Kashmir. Our ancestors came to Kashmir from Central Asia around the same time as Sultan Zain-ul-Aabedin was encouraging immigration to the valley. Our ancestor in Kashmir was a high ranking official in the court of the Sultan. Our great grand father was famously known as "Tibet Bakal" or "Merchant of Tibet" in the late 19th century. He would travel from Srinagar, Kashmir to Ladakh and all the way to Tibet on horseback for journeys that lasted months. He would return back with the fabric "Pashm" that would be then used to create the beautiful Pashmina Shawls. Continuing in his and our ancestor's journey in the Valley of Kashmir, we are proud to bring back the real Pashmina to the world through our online store.
